PEOPLE's ORGANISATIONS
For generations, our communities have practiced mobile pastoralism not out of necessity alone, but out of deep knowledge — knowledge that seasonal movement across rangelands nourishes our animals and our lands. It provides food, restores soils, sustains biodiversity and keeps communities resilient. We have long known what science is now confirming:
mobility is a nature-based solution, not a problem to be solved.
Yet across many regions, our mobility is under increasing threat; fences cut across ancient corridors, land grabs erase customary tenure, and rigid policies written without our voices restrict the very movement that keeps our herds, our families, and our ecosystems alive. When we cannot move, food systems shatter, rangelands degrade, conflicts rise, livelihoods collapse, and cultures and identities erode. For us, securing mobility is integral to our land rights:
mobility deserves recognition, not restriction.
CIVIL SOCIETY
As organisations working alongside pastoralists, we, the civil society members of ILC, keenly support the Mobility Matters campaign. We recognise that the struggle to secure pastoral mobility as inseparable from the broader struggle for land rights, food sovereignty, cultural identity, environmental justice, and climate resilience.
INTERNATIONAL ORGANISATIONS
Recognising key gaps in land, climate and development agendas, we, the international organisations members of ILC, firmly support the Mobility Matters campaign. Rangelands are not empty lands. Rather, they are governed, managed and sustained by mobile pastoralists whose tenure rights remain among the most overlooked in global policy.
Securing those rights is not a niche issue – it is
central to achieving land degradation neutrality, biodiversity targets, climate commitments, and safeguarding our collective futures.
MULTI-STAKEHOLDER ALLIANCES
As multistakeholder alliances supported by ILC, we wholeheartedly support the Mobility Matters campaign.
We are invested in harnessing the power of partnership to shift narratives and bring its demands into every relevant policy arena this year (and beyond) — from national dialogues to international negotiations.
